The Minnesota Timberwolves have intensified their pursuit of D'Angelo Russell.

Deals have yielded no traction as the Golden State Warriors have been inclined to keep Russell. The Wolves attempted to sign Russell this past offseason and is known to be close friends with Karl-Antony Towns.

Minnesota traded Jeff Teague to the Atlanta Hawks earlier on Thursday.

I'm a Culver fan.  If I were the Warriors I'd be psyched to do Russell, WCS and Glen Robinson for Culver, Dieng and Keith Bates Diop.

This pursuit seems to be the Timberwolves building their team to appease Towns instead of a winning roster. What will keep Towns happy and wanting to continue to be in Minnesota is winning and this is not a winning move in the long term. They're going to utilize their best assets on acquiring a player who is probably best as a 3rd option on a contender.

They're situation is reminiscent of the Pelicans and AD. Their first option should be improving their general management and scouting department and draft odds for these next 2-3 years before increased losing and the contract situation compounds the problem. Unless it's for a player like Bradley Beal, giving up draft compensation to acquire a player should be out of the question.

At this point, trading Wiggins for CP3+/-1st or Westbrook+/-1st instantly improves the team and, before the Teague trade, a Wiggins/Teague/Dieng for Beal/Wall would have been a very interesting trade.

I think you gravely overestimate Wiggins’ trade value.

I focused on the contracts/salary relief and improving Minnesota instead of making the trade feasible for the other teams involved.

I think it's far from grave, Wiggins is a 6'7", 24 y/o, athletic wing averaging 22/5/3. OKC is rebuilding and Paul is not their long term plans; Houston isn't settling on the Harden-Westbrook pairing and save approx. $40M on the deal; adding Covington to the trade proposals makes them feasible for both OKC and Houston. The Washington trade depends on the Wiz' sentiment about Wall, his contract, and their long term plans, which they might be able to take advantage of any of Washington's doubts surrounding Wall's contract/durability (though asking for Beal to offload Wall is probably too aggressive at this point, it's more of an MLB trade).
